- "The author made the eventful trip in 1849 -1850 and kept a diary of all his experiences and all events that passed under his observation. Now 43 years later he used the notes of his journey to provide an interesting and entertaining tale....Kurutz 37 says 'Barra, according to Cowan, worked at one time as a saloon keeper catering to the printing trade. These privately printed reminiscences are based on a log or sea diary. Barra took the ship Samson from Philadelphia on October 5, 1849, and reached Rio de Janeiro on December 30. He changed ships to the Urania, on which he worked for his passage. He arrived at San Francisco on May 3 and made a partial list of abandoned ships in the harbor'" -- From bookseller's catalogue
