- Summary
- Francis Ashby, a conventional senior tutor at St. John's College, Oxford, heads off for a walking holiday in Switzerland. There he meets two American women, Caroline Hartley and her 18-year-old ward Elinor, the company of whom he finds a refreshing change from his well-ordered male world in Oxford. Once back home, his colleagues realize his experience in Switzerland has brought about a change in Francis, and when his two American friends make a surprise visit to Oxford, it soon becomes apparent that both women are competing for his affections
