Summary
"In his bestselling autobiography, My Years with General Motors, Alfred P. Sloan wrote: 'To Pierre S. du Pont must go the credit for the very survival of General Motors and for laying the foundation of its future progress.' This meticulously researched biography demonstrates specifically and clearly why Pierre S. du Pont, head of the Du Pont Company and later of General Motors, is justly considered one of the great pioneers in the organizing and managing of large corporations. When Pierre joined the Du Pont Company in 1890 it was a loosely-run family gunpowder establishment with assets of $13,276,213 and an annual business of 4% of this amount. Through his astuteness and initiative in the areas of finance and management, the next 29 years saw Du Pont grow into a giant, vertically integrated corporation with assets of $308,846,397 and an annual business of $329,121,607, a leader in American industry already beginning its diversification. The authors describe Pierre's relations with his family, including his charming and able cousin, Coleman du Pont, who shared the presidency of the company with Pierre for 14 years, and Alfred I. du Pont, who brought suit against Pierre over the latter's purchase of Coleman's company stock, and lost. They analyze Pierre's ability to make his chosen executives--John J. Raskob, Amory Haskell, Arthur Moxham--work so well together; they show in detail how under Pierre the company adjusted its activities and organization to meet changing needs; and they tell of Pierre's years with General Motors when, largely through his leadership, the company survived a serious financial reverse to become the world's largest and one of its best managed and most profitable enterprises."--Dust jacket
