- 清末宣统二年, 1910年10月. 东南各省同盟会代表纷纷抵达香港, 准备参加由孙中山亲自主持的秘密会议, 商议在广州等地举行大规模反清起义. 广东将军铁山奉清廷密诏, 携武装势力秘密抵港, 要在孙中山抵达香港之际刺杀孙中山. 香港同盟会负责人秦少白是这次会议的筹备者, 也是铁山重点盯查的对象. 大商人李玉堂急于接到从海外留学归来的儿子李重光. 李玉堂在广州的母亲病重, 已十年没见长孙, 要他带长孙速归. 李玉堂终于接到了儿子, 却意外发现他已加入同盟会, 而介绍人正是自己的朋友, 《中国日报》主编秦少白. 李玉堂曾多次赞助秦少白的革命活动, 但出钱赞助跟把独生子献出去完全是两回事, 他大怒之下与秦少白决裂, 要用强把儿子带回广州. 李重光思想激进, 但面对威严强悍的父亲无济于事. 黄包车夫阿四跟上述两茬人事都没关系, 他脑子里只有两样东西. 一个是钱, 为了多挣几文钱他什么委屈都肯受, 下跪都不吝. 另一个是未婚妻阿纯, 他只要一闭上眼就能看见阿纯. 阿纯有眼病, 再不治就可能失明, 阿四攒钱是想帮阿纯治眼病, 然后正式向阿纯提亲. 每一文钱都是通往幸福的台阶. 秦少白获知铁山的追杀情报, 紧急动员可能动员到的人来保护孙中山. 但大多数人都像阿四一样对革命漠不关心, 让他们出钱已是出血, 真的出血绝无可能. 而铁山的追杀已经开始, 形势万分危急
