Summary

Kochegar, an aging Yakut who has retired as a major and a Hero of the Soviet Union, is working as a coal stoker in St. Petersburg in the 1990s. To make a little money "off the books," he works for a criminal cartel, cremating their victims in his furnace. His life, and that of his beautiful daughter, become more and more entwined with that of his criminal employers
