Summary
Set in 1844 in a gloomy mansion on the Hudson River, Miranda Wells goes to work as a companion to a distant relative's daughter. Shortly thereafter, his wife dies and she becomes the object of his affection. They marry and she bears him a son. Unfortunately, the child is sickly and her husband is desperate for a male heir.
