"一九八零年底,下乡知青林超然和已怀孕的妻子何凝之返城回到了哈尔滨。返城知青就业是个老大难,几经周折,他们终于和王东海等人成立了“希望车辆修理厂”。入夏,何凝之的妹妹何静之考上大学了。何凝之生产时,孩子呱呱坠地,她却因难产永远离开了人世。何静之与在工商所工作的男朋友韩士强提出了分手。感情受挫的韩士强借故查封了小工厂并将林超然等人带走。林超然一篇有关知青就业的文稿在晚报上发表后,得到了市领寻的接见并给他安排了工作。何静之向父母表明自己爱上了林超然,林超然又考入了“八一农大”,与美国学者普赖斯成为朋友。他的两篇论文引起了学界重视,美、法分别希望他做访问学者前去该国。何静之终于和林超然走到了一起。与林超然、何凝之一起相继返城的还有他们在兵团的战友罗一民、杨一凡、张继红、王志共同在城市里经历着“住房”、“就业”、“剩一代”等等讨生活的艰辛、迷茫,在这座城市里一起经历着改革开放前夕社会变革的辛酸、曲折、迷惘、阵痛与收获。几十万知青返城,给城市带来了巨大的就业压力,而个体户和自谋生路被视为投机倒把,罗一民、杨一凡、张继红、王志都是其中一分子,他们跟随林超然经历了这段特殊历史时期的创痛,各自与共同寻找着自己的现实与梦想,爱情与希望,带着对于过往的忏悔荡涤自己的身心。与此同时,何静之的二姐何慧之却爱上了“失忆男友”––知青杨一凡,杨一凡是一个纯洁如纸的知识青年,也是一个懮秀画家,却因为那段荒诞的历史而遭受着精神的折磨,无论是小姨子爱上大姐夫,还是二姐喜欢上“精神病”,这两段爱情在世人看来都是惊天骇俗的。"--Container
