- Summary
- In September 1990, Latoya Hunter began junior high school in the Bronx. She also began a diary in which she faithfully set down her thoughts and feelings. She recounts triumphs and conflicts as her youthful urge for independence grows; she experiences the joys and pangs of first love, hears the gunshots that herald the death of her neighbor, attends her brother's wedding, and travels to the family home in Jamaica. And she turns thirteen. Lively, poignant, and winning, this is a timely portrait of adolescence--about the universal challenges of youth and about the ways it is shaped by the inner city. It is also a lively introduction to a delightful girl whose humor and idealism serve as an inspiration to all who read her words.--From publisher description
