His books include: Stendhal, America in the Movies, The Magician's Doubts: Nabokov and the Risks of Fiction, Children of Silence: On Contemporary Fiction, Belle de Jour, Franz Kafka, and The Road to Delphi: The Life and Afterlife of Oracles
