- Summary
- "We are in the late nineteenth century. Celestine, a young maid who worked in Paris in the homes of nobles and bourgeois, arrives in a small town in Normandy to serve a wealthy couple, and her life changes beyond recognition. The daily routine is monotonous, the residents of the town are provincial and gossipy, and its new masters turn out to be miserable. Against this background, as the longing for the vibrant and desolate Paris of her new life casts a gloom on her, the beautiful and discerning Celestine decides to write a bold and sincere diary, in which alongside her childhood story and description of present experiences, she remembers the homes she served and the colorful characters who inhabited them. Maid's Diary is a rich and multi-layered novel: a breathtaking portrait of the French nobility and bourgeoisie, for their dubious chastity, their despicable values and their ridiculous lives; A social novel rooted in a charged historical period, voicing sharp criticism of racist, hierarchical, and corrupt French society, and its declining institutions; A spicy and daring diary that tells the muted story of anonymous maids whose lives are worth as much as a garlic peel. It is a deep and gloomy satirical work, full of humor, bitterness and truth - and above all humanity. Are the aristocrats happy and their servants poor, or vice versa"-- Google translation of page [4] of cover
