Summary
In the industrial city of Datong in Shanxi province, the most dramatic events in the lives of the post 1980 generation take place on TV. Xiao Ji and Bin Bin are jobless, best friends who spend their limitless free time hanging around a pool hall, tooling around on mopeds, and coveting the American dollars that will get them out of their rut. Xiao Ji is interested in Qiao Qiao, a traveling dancer shilling for Mongolian King Liquor, but she can't escape the control of the minor racketeer who acts as her agent. Bin Bin is seeing studious Yuan Yuan, but she is about to leave to attend a university in Beijing. Inspired by the opening scene of "Pulp Fiction," the two friends hatch a comically misconceived robbery scheme to scrape up some quick money and escape their existential inertia. Promised prosperity and meaningful change, the young can't seem to find, much less reap, these benefits. The friends remain, ultimately, lost--on a misguided search for fleeting, unknown pleasures
