- In the spring of 1918 Tarakanov, an estate manager of prince Tikhvinsky steals from the abandoned by the owners estate a collection of paintings and sculptures. He is assisted by the prince's fencing teacher, Markiz, and a homeless boy Keshka. Their plan is to move the collection abroad, and so the thieves join the circus and travel across the country, but they are being chased by a restless police detective Makar Ovchinnikov
