"At the time of compulsory military service, when the recruits were 100 days from the end of their service, they would celebrate with a wacky almost-costume party. A few weeks before the fete, a humorous invitation was sent to the family, friends, village, etc. to collect a little money. The appeals were send out in a graphic form that mimics a funeral announcement (this gathering includes an example of one such announcement). The text of the appeal also mimics and satirizes a funeral announcment while also satirizing military service. The group includes one rare oringal photograph of one group of soldiers at their Pére Cent, with five dressed as clerics and a coffin in the center."--From bookseller's description
